I recently came to a realization.........at some point in my life I lost my path. I missed the point. When I was younger and struggling, and trying to find some kind of point to life, I asked my father a question....."Did you ever want more?". What I meant by that is did he ever want more than to just have a business and a family........did he ever want more than an ordinary life. I guess I was trying to discover whether or not ending up with the typical stereotypical (upper) middle class family was something people actually aspired to, or whether it was something they settled for when their real dreams fell through. I grew up in a situation similar to today's youth, surrounded by the influence of popular culture. Fame and wealth were things to be envious of. Me and my group of friends would try to guess at how much money famous celebrities and sports figures would make, imagining that those types of riches would mean a care free life full of the best of everything, exotic vacations, and beautiful women, etc. The popular culture of the 80s and 90s didn't teach that being the patriarch of a nice middle class family was akin to being a rock star, or an A list actor, or being the CEO of amazon.com. I remember his answer to me being something like "yeah me and your mother wanted to have a family". I also remember being a little surprised at the answer, I think mostly the fact that it was said without hesitation and with so much confidence that I was thinking to myself, either he's lying and he's really not as confident as he is making out to be, or we are on completely different pages here. As I've learned a few things over the years since that time, I can now see how the goal of raising a family with someone you love would be one of the most challenging and rewarding ways to spend a life. This would be much more worthwhile that simply chasing material riches, or fame, or glory for glory's sake. The richness of life comes from the people in it, and sharing moments with those people can be some of the most precious pieces of time in one's life
